Megan's an energy saving winner with her speedy shower challenge
Wed 29th March 2017Seven-year old Megan Winter from Walkington is celebrating her success after winning a national competition organised by energy company E.ON with her idea for saving energy at home.
Megan impressed the judges of the #MyEnergyHack competition, which asked entrants to share their ingenious ideas for using, saving or celebrating energy, by challenging her family to see who could manage the quickest shower and using an egg timer to track their progress.
Nick Taylor works for E.ON on its wind farms, including Humber Gateway and Out Newton at Easington, and visited Megan at Walkington Primary School to present her prize of an iPad mini. Nick Taylor said: “The #MyEnergyHack competition was intended as a way of engaging young people in the topic of energy which we hoped would allow them to think creatively about how they use it, and passionately about how they could save it. We received around 200 entries, but Megan’s idea stood out for us because she’d taken a really very simple concept and made it fun for her whole family to get involved with.”
Megan said: “I tried to think of things in my house that use energy and that all of my family use so that we could have a fun competition together. I thought we could have a family competition to see who was the quickest in the shower and used least water. I made a table to write down all of our times and found an old trophy to give to the winner!”
The #MyEnergyHack competition forms part of E.ON’s new educational programme, E.ON Energise Anything! It includes online educational content (videos, classroom activities, home activities) and hands-on workshops delivered in schools, all aimed at encouraging 5 to 18 year olds to explore the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) in an unexpected way.
