A successful weekend at Beverley Folk Festival

Tue 23rd June 2015
Bev Folk Fest

Just Beverley went down to the Beverley Folk Festival at the weekend to see this year’s bands and soak up the atmosphere. Here’s what we thought:

Crowds enjoyed the mild evening on Friday, introducing the festival with a line-up to set the bar for the whole weekend. There was no gradual build up for this year’s acts, with Hayseed Dixie taking the main stage on Friday and kicking things off with one of the most energetic performances an audience could ask for.

Having travelled from the United States to perform at the festival, Beverley kicked off the start of their UK tour. The band can be found at festivals of all sizes, including Glastonbury and T in the Park, but whether it’s crowds of thousands or hundreds of thousands, the bluegrass and rock band pour their energy into every song as though it was their one and only chance.

The energy they emit from the stage is easily contagious, and saw festival goers from teenagers celebrating the end of their A level exams to families and groups of older friends soaking up the atmosphere.

Kerry and Lyn, a pair of friends from Beverley enjoyed their time on Friday evening, saying, “We always have a great time at the festival. It’s friendly and fun, it’s a great way to relax and see some live music with friends in a different setting.”

Even the grey clouds and soggy fields didn’t manage to put a downer on things as the weekend went on. With regular attendees coming from as far as Cambridge, Newcastle and Swindon, it was going to take a lot more than a bit of rain to spoil the mood.

Atmosphere is the key word at the festival. Whether it’s members of an eccentric rock band, a mellow solo singer or a ticket holder, they all comment on the same thing. It’s a theme that regularly comes up when we speak to people in Beverley, and one that seemed to float in and out of the marquees this weekend, with everyone appreciating how ambient the atmosphere was. Without the overbearing crowds found at other festivals around the country, Beverley Folk Festival offered the rare and genuine chance to meet up with friends, take all of the family or casually wander around the stages to watch the acts, soaking up that vague sense of familiarity that can only be found in Yorkshire.
