Get online with Job Centre
Thu 5th March 2015Beverley Job Centre invited Jobseekers to an event to learn more about how to use a computer and the internet to search for jobs and make applications.
The session was arranged because there are many people who lack the skills to use a computer and get online but increasingly employers are demanding those skills in the work place. The event was attended by local MP, Graham Stuart who called in to find out more about what is being done to help jobseekers use digital services.
Commenting on his visit, Graham said: “The session wasn’t just about using a computer to make benefit claims or apply for jobs, there was a genuine interest in improving the skills and employability of those searching for work.
“I’m really pleased to see Beverly Jobcentre has taken this initiative to help people get online; it was great to see jobseekers at the session, working hard to get themselves back into employment.”
Suzanne Edwards-Vidal from Beverley Jobcentre said: “An estimated 7 million people in the UK are not online and 11 million lack the skills to make the most of the opportunities the internet has to offer.
“In today’s labour market it is vital to raise awareness of the benefits of being online and how digital inclusion can vastly improve a person’s job prospects. Our aim at the jobcentre is to provide easy access to digital services including free WiFi, so people can access information about jobs, training and the support available to get them back into work as soon as possible.
“People looking for work can access digital services in the jobcentre through a number of recently installed customer computers, or use their own devices e.g. laptops, i-Pads, and mobile phones. We hold regular ‘Introduction to IT’ sessions and offer 1-1 support to show people how to get the most from digital services. We can also refer people to some excellent free local IT courses. “I’m pleased Graham took the time to call in to see what we’re doing to help more people use the internet to search for work, to get on-line and be digitally enabled. It’s good to have his support.”
