Bridlington recognised as a national Beach Volleyball Hub
Thu 4th May 2017Bridlington South Beach has been granted FIVB (Fédération Internationale de Volleyball) status and recognised as a national hub for GoSpike Beach Volleyball by Volleyball England.
In the past 12 months, over 3500 people have been engaged in organised and informal Beach Volleyball, and the success of events such as the Bridlington Beach Open and Volleyball England Beach Tour have shown Bridlington to be a showcase beach to host major events.
To kick off the 2017 season, the ‘Go Spike’ outdoor Beach Volleyball courts have now been installed on Bridlington South Beach and are available for residents and tourists to use. The two courts are located in front of the Foreshores Office, Princess Mary Promenade, with a further two courts to be installed on South Cliff Beach, below the Park and Ride, following the Tidal Waves Festival in June, 2017.
The courts are situated close to cafés and public facilities, with equipment available to hire from the Foreshores Office and the Park and Ride information point, for a small refundable deposit. For further information, contact the Foreshores Office on (01262) 678255.
Lou Adams, sport, play and arts service manager, said: “This recognition is great news for Bridlington, and further acknowledgement of the town’s increasing importance for both sport and leisure. I am absolutely delighted that the efforts and the good working links of both our Sport, Play & Arts and Foreshores Teams have come to fruition with this accolade.”
Adam Toes, sport and active communities officer, added : “Go Spike is a nationwide campaign delivered in partnership with Volleyball England ,which aims to increase participation and make beach volleyball more accessible to all ages. So why not grab a ball, hit the beach and access this free facility for some fun with family and friends?”
A number of free coaching sessions will also take place throughout the Go Spike season (April – September), as part of the council’s new Active Coast initiative, providing opportunities to get active, be healthy and enjoy life on the East Yorkshire coast, under the headings of 'Explore, Join in, and Enjoy'.
