BEVERLEY LAUGHS AT THE 'TICKLED' TIGER - FOOD, DRINK AND COMEDY JULY 20th - 22nd

31 shows in 2½ days - shows for adults and kids, shows for families, sketches, music, stand-up, improv, visual, quiz, musical - anything goes! Hour-long shows which you pay what you think the shows are worth! A whole new concept for Beverley!

Hot on the heels of the successful Beverley Fringe Festival in June comes Beverley Laughs. It’s the brainchild of Mel and Martin Davis who have been putting on comedy shows in Hull since 2011.

Directors of RTCE productions and known for C69 Comedy Club in Hull and beyond, with shows at various venues including Pave, Hull Comedy Festival, Hull Sesh and the Minerva, Mel and Martin are keen to bring their events expertise (and knowledge of how to make people laugh) to Beverley. They know Allen Slinger, Manager at the Tiger in Lairgate from his time at New Clarence in Hull and Martin just knew that the Tiger would be a great venue for their first Beverley Laughs Comedy Festival.

As a lighting and sound engineer and with an ‘eye’ for making the best of available space for events, Martin has already worked out how to ensure the Tiger becomes ‘Tickled’ over the weekend of July 20th - 22nd. Mel is from an administration
background, so she makes sure everything runs smoothly from an operational perspective.

So what is planned? There will be comedy on the evening of Friday 20th, from lunchtime until late on the Saturday and lunchtime until evening on Sunday 22nd with comedians from a whole range of genres from the local and national comedy
scene. Rob Rouse, Steff Todd, Scott Bennett and Anything Could Happen (Kids Improv Show) are all booked to appear along with local stalwarts such as Jed Salisbury. 

Alex Kealy, who featured in the Independent’s Best Jokes of the Edinburgh Fringe Ever and the Evening Standard’s Best Jokes of Edinburgh 2017 will be there on the Friday evening and on Saturday at 8.30pm is Super Trooper Improv (STI)

with ‘The STI Super Show’. Improv is a comedy format which includes comedy sketches and games based entirely on suggestions from the audience - like TVs ‘Whose Line is it Anyway?’

Every show is different, but STI’s shows elsewhere have seen a sheepdog arguing with its owner, a news report on the Thames being turned to custard and Michael Parkinson being outed as a Russian spy! One of STI’s favourite games is
Party Quirks where the audience give performers playing guests at a part unusual quirks, for example, they may be obsessed with shoes.

The party host, who has not heard the audience’s suggestions, has to host the party whilst working out what the quirks are! Just Beverley is busy thinking of an unusual quirk to suggest at this show - mad photographer or extreme wordsmith
perhaps!!

Another first Just Beverley is particularly excited about is the Interactive Pub Comedy Quiz with Alex Love which was an Edinburgh Comedy Fringe sell-out last year. It’s for age 14+ so could be a little risqué, but part-quiz, part stand-up is an
original concept in itself.

Then there’s Lois Mills, who is looking rather scary on our front-page photo! Lois won Leicester Square Sketch-off 2018 for her unique and often dark blend of sketch and character. She’s been described as a cross between Victoria Wood and
The League of Gentlemen, is a font of obscure and obtuse Yorkshire references and always  manages to bring forth another level to character comedy.

Beyond the Joke calls her ‘the decidedly-strange Lois Mills who started off weird ad got weirder’. You will be able to judge for yourself when you see her on Friday 20th at 8.30pm along with Hull comedian Steve Rimmer.

Allen Slinger said: “This is something different and will be a whole lot of fun - and it’s another first for Beverley!”
