Thu 8th September 2016Past
Beverley Golf Club started in 1889 as a 9 hole-course and is known as the oldest golf club in East Yorkshire. Six years later, in 1895, the club expanded to an 18 hole-course. The Black Mill, which is located in the middle of the golf course, was the original golf clubhouse until it relocated to the Anti Mill in 1906.
The club has embedded into the Beverley community ever since it opened. Club captains have included a renowned painter (Fred Elwell) and the inventor of the shock absorber (Gordon Armstrong).
The first female captain was the Lady of the Manor at Bishop Burton and the British Open Champion of 1905, Bertha Thompson. Bertha became the captain in 1902 at the age of 25, she was also the first unmarried female captain.
Present
This year the third annual Masters 'Drive, chip and Putt' competition for younger golfers was held. This competition offers younger golfers to show off their talents in America. This inspired the Golf Club to start their own 'Drive, chip and Putt' competition, and the competition is 20 minutes long, as they learned that children enjoy games more when they require less concentration.
Over the 2016 Summer, P.G.A Professional Stewart Fraser hosted golfing events around Beverley to create a greater interest of golf for youngsters in the community. They also hosted fun family nights at the golf club to attract all ages and widen the range of activities, which can introduce them into using their new golf studio, which is the latest addition to the club.
The P.G.A. provide coaching for juniors and adults, who may be interested in trying golf as a new hobby.
Future
They have big plans for the future of the golf club, as they just added a golf studio into the club, they aspire to create a larger interest in golfing for all ages. To start increasing the interest in golf, Stewart Fraser and Michael Durcan are going to be visiting primary schools around East Yorkshire, as they want golf to be considered as part in the school curriculum, just like football and rugby.
