Work starts on new green space for Bridlington

The ground has been broken on an exciting project to create a linear park along the banks of the Gypsey Race through the centre of Bridlington.
The project, part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, will be delivered in phases over the next two years, with phase one anticipated to be complete by autumn.
Gypsey Race Park will be a green corridor along the stream providing pleasant walking and cycling routes, play areas and improved habitats for wildlife. The project is an important part of Bridlington’s regeneration plans and will provide an attractive edge for the development sites and the improved streets being created through the second phase of the Bridlington Integrated Transport Plan (BridITP2).
The area’s heritage will also be celebrated through the erection of new signs that will tell the stories behind the people who have worked and lived along the Gypsey Race.
The first phase of the park is being developed adjacent to the Hilderthorpe Coach Park.
Councillor Andy Burton, cabinet portfolio holder for economic investment and planning delivery at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The new linear park along the Gypsey Race is further evidence of this council’s commitment to regenerating Bridlington for the benefit of both its residents and for visitors, which are important for the town’s economy.
“More than £5 million is being invested in this project over the two phases of development and the feedback we have received for the scheme has been overwhelmingly positive.
“Not only is the new park going to help boost the economy, it will also provide a new recreation space to be enjoyed by all – benefiting people’s health and wellbeing.”
A second phase of works is also planned to take place adjacent to Tesco and Palace Car Park. This will see the river, its banks and the surrounding area cleared of debris before being landscaped and planted. The areas of woodland will be managed to improve the natural environment.
At a recent public exhibition, held at Bridlington Spa, provided the opportunity for members of the public to provide feedback on the proposals for phase two and ask questions of council officers.
More than 170 people signed in during the four hour and the Bridlington Town Team meeting, with 87 response forms completed and 81 of those supporting the scheme. A planning application is expected to be brought forward for phase two in March/April.
Councillor Burton said: “Subject to planning permission, the second phase of the Gypsey Race Park could start later this year with an anticipated completion date of summer 2019.
“The Gypsey Race Park will become a real asset to the town of Bridlington, providing a pleasant green space to be enjoyed by both residents and visitors alike.”
