Wold Top Actif manager teams up with performance coach for spectacular charity challenge
Wed 1st August 2018The manager of an East Yorkshire cycling team is embarking on a remarkable challenge to raise money for a Barton man whose treatment for a rare and aggressive cancer is not yet available in the UK.
On 13th August, Rich Baldwin, who manages the Wold Top Actif racing team, will embark on a challenge that will see him scale the equivalent of Mt. Everest in a cycling phenomenon known as ‘Everesting'.
Beverley based Rich explains the nature of the challenge: "The concept of Everesting is simple. Pick any hill, anywhere in the world and cycle repeats of that single climb in one single activity until you climb 8,848m - the equivalent height of Mt. Everest. Complete the challenge, and you'll find your name in the Cyclists' Hall of Fame, alongside some of the best climbers in the world."
Rich, who is partnering with Wold Top Actif's coach, Tom Ramsay from The Edge Coaching, will be doing the Everesting attempt using the Tour De Yorkshire Col De Garrowby Strava segment and it is estimated that 68 ascents should result in sufficient altitude gain. It is anticipated that the 118 mile challenge will take the pair 14 hours to complete.
Rich continued: "I am undertaking the gruelling challenge to help raise £300,000 to fund immunotherapy treatment in Germany for 28 year old Aaron Winstanley. The fund currently stands at £151,000, so if there's anything you can add to boost this, I'd be really grateful. You can donate online https://www.gofundme.com/aaronsbattle."
Driffield's Tom Ramsay is ‘Everesting' in memory of his friend, James Cowton, who sadly passed away during a race in the Isle of Man recently: "I was devastated by news of his tragic accident and was keen that my attempt in August should be in his memory and could raise money for charity in his name.
"We will have a lot of people behind us, but this is a very personal challenge and whether we succeed or fail will be down to our individual stamina and determination. Either way, if supporters can put their hands in their pockets in James' memory or for Aaron's future, the attempt will be worthwhile!"
Tom is raising funds for The Rob Vine Fund, a voluntary charity that is dedicated to providing the best possible pre-hospital medical and rescue care, equipment and medics' training for the large number of motorsport events that take place in the Isle of Man. You can donate online at http://www.robvinefund.im/, quoting ‘EverestforJames'.
The Wold Top Actif team also organises the Sundown Sportive, a 60 mile sportive with a difference that starts and finishes at Wold Top Brewery on 26th August.
