Wildflower planting sessions to be held in Humber Bridge Country Park
Tue 15th October 2024East Riding of Yorkshire Council will host a wildflower planting event at the Humber Bridge Country Park [HBCP], during the weekend of the 26th-28th October 2024.
The ‘love your meadow’ event will see volunteers plant 4,000 wildflowers in the park over three days.
There are opportunities for people to become nature reserve volunteers, and there will be family activities around creating fairy gardens.
The event is part of the Improving Meadows and Woodlands project, funded by the UK government. The grant, from the UK government, will fund wildflowers, trees, bulbs, a greenhouse, rabbit-proof fencing, tools and materials.
The funding was secured with the support of the Friends of the HBCP, who are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, and are directly involved in the project.
The wildflower meadows will provide an environment for bees and butterflies to thrive. They provide broad benefits to the wider ecosystem, such as habitats for birds and hedgehogs, and enhance the natural landscape.
The scheme will provide additional benefits to the local community, in terms of improving air quality and encouraging visitors to the region.
Councillor Nick Coultish, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism said “We’re delighted that this initiative is taking place to enhance the Humber Bridge Country Park. I encourage residents to sign up to volunteer for the wildflower planting and get involved in creating a better environment for the local community.”
