Oakhill Nature Reserve & The Chemistry of Woodlands - Goole Museum

A brand-new free exhibition at Goole Museum running from Tuesday, 13 July to Saturday, 21 September 2024 combines the story and nature of Oakhill Nature Reserve and the innovative artwork of local artist Lou Hazelwood. The exhibition explores the origins of the site from its time as a busy railway siding, that was full of noise and steam, to its abandonment and eventual reclamation by nature. The heart of the display reveals the wide varieties of mammals, insects, reptiles, plants, and birds that can be seen at Oakhill today. This fabulous wildlife is showcased through many images captured on the reserve by local photographers. The story of Oakhill forms a backdrop for the artwork of Lou Hazelwood.

Lou has worked with East Riding Council Countryside Access officers on the reserve to explore 10x8 large format analogue colour duplicating film as a canvas to develop experimental techniques of manipulating emulsions with materials gathered from Oakhill’s woodlands. This has been undertaken in a way to understand ecological change by exploring how the chemicals of woodlands alter photographic emulsion.

The official launch of the exhibition is on Tuesday, 13 July from 10am to 12pm, and there will be a chance to meet the team behind the exhibition. Visit: https://www.eastridingmuseums.co.uk/ to find out more.

Beverley Grand Prix

Beverley Grand Prix cycle race will take place on Friday, 26 July and will be the British Cycling National Circuit Series finale, bringing to a close a six-week long nationwide series of events.

There will be everything to fight for as the series comes to Beverley with the best cyclists competing on the night, culminating in the award of series champion.

Last run in 2017, the Beverley Grand Prix has in recent memory produced such winners as Brenton Jones, Chris Lawless, and three times Olympic gold medallist, Ed Clancy OBE.

In the weeks before the Paris Olympic Games, Beverley Grand Prix will proudly bring round six of the Open and Women’s National Circuit Series for an evening of fast, thrilling cycle racing action. This will start around 4pm with a community ride in memory of Ian Burnett, giving families a chance to experience a national level cycling event in the safety of closed roads around the town.

Multiple youth races and a support race will precede the two joint headline events as the evening draws to a close around 10pm.
