East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust are talking part in a walk to raise awareness of Safer Sleep Week, running 10 to 16 March.
Safer Sleep Week is The Lullaby Trust’s national awareness campaign aimed at anyone looking after a young baby.
The East Riding walk takes place on Tuesday 11 March, beginning at Cottingham Children’s Centre at 10am. Representatives from across the council and health services, including Councillor John Whittle, Chair of children’s scrutiny, health visitors, school nurses, members of public health and children’s services will join the walk. Staff will be speaking to families at Cottingham Children's Centre between 9.30 to 10am, and between 12-1pm at Haltemprice Children's Centre.
The route is five miles and is expected to take approximately two hours, finishing at Anlaby Children's Centre. Along the way, the group will visit libraries and hospitals talking to parents and carers about safer sleep practices.
Councillor Victoria Aitken, cabinet member for children, families and education said: “Safer Sleep Week provides an opportunity to highlight safer sleeping practice for babies, and ensure that parents and carers have all the information and advice for safer sleeping.”
Safer sleep for babies: the basics -
Lie your baby on their back
Keep their cot clear
Use a firm, flat, waterproof mattress
Keep baby smoke-free
Avoid your baby getting too hot – try to keep the room between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius.
Sleep your baby in the same room as you for at least the first six months.
