TREGONING HAS MON-DAY MOTIVATION AT BEVERLEY
Mon 30th July 2018Marcus Tregoning hopes Monaadhil can set the tone for an important week when he runs in the Wilford Watts Memorial Handicap at Beverley on Tuesday.
The four-year-old son of Dark Angel, owned by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, has already won twice from just five starts and is one of seven declared runners for the eight-and-a-half furlong prize. Monaadhil could not justify 11-10 favouritism in a mile-and-a-quarter handicap at Epsom last time, but his trainer expects the drop in trip to suit him at Beverley. And should things go according to script on the Westwood, Tregoning will be given an uplifting tonic ahead of Dance The Dream's quest for Group Two honours in the Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes at Goodwood on Thursday.
The Whitsbury handler, who has saddled two Beverley winners from just five runners in as many years, said: "We are quite hopeful Monaadhil will run very, very well. He disappointed at Epsom last time, but it was a very hot day and watered ground, which didn't seem to suit him at all as he just got worried out of it. That might also have had something to do with the trip, so perhaps he's more effective as a miler.
"Beverley has had some rain, so conditions should be a lot more suitable than at Epsom.
"He's a lovely horse and Beverley is a very nice track, so we hope and pray that this is the perfect race for him."
Monaadhil, who will be ridden by in-form jockey Franny Norton, faces last-time-out scorers Club Wexford (Roger Fell) and Three Saints Bay (David O'Meara) in the Wilford Watts Memorial Handicap (4.20).
Kevin Ryan's Mont Kinabalu and the Les Eyre-trained Detachment have both won at Beverley this season and have also been declared, as has two-time course scorer Alejandro, from David Loughnane's Shropshire yard. Brian Ellison's Sumner Beach completes a fascinating line-up. Tregoning reports Dance The Dream ready for business ahead of her big assignment at Goodwood. A daughter of the trainer's Derby winner Sir Percy, the five-year-old mare has not yet raced this season but has some fine form in the book and is expected to thrive over a longer trip.
Tregoning said: "I don't imagine Goodwood will have too much more rain now so it's full steam ahead. We've had a few issues with her, but she's in good order and is ready to run. We had ideas about running in her in the Ebor, but she's too low in the weights for that now, but this is a nice target to aim at. I think she'll be fine over a mile and three-quarters and I'm quite hopeful she'll stay the trip well. On the ratings, she could run well."
Beverley's Family Raceday begins at 2pm and features eight races, including two divisions of the Lady Jane Bethell Memorial Handicap for lady amateur riders.
The going is good to soft, while Tuesday's forecast is for light cloud and a high of 23C.
