Tree Planting Weekend Coming To Millington Wood Nature Reserve

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Countryside Access Team are inviting visitors to attend their free tree-planting weekend, happening on Friday, 26; Saturday, 27; and Sunday, 28 January, to help preserve the Millington Wood Local Nature Reserve near Pocklington.

Millington Wood is a beautiful woodland, sitting in a picturesque Yorkshire Wolds valley. Unfortunately, in recent years, the trees have been affected by ash dieback disease.

The Countryside Access Team will now be planting a mix of new trees to ensure the woods continue to be a great home for wildlife for years to come. It is also hoped that the tree planting will help conserve this ancient woodland for future generations.

The trees to be planted have been chosen especially for growing on the chalky soils of the Wolds, and will provide valuable food and nesting sites for many local birds.

Visitors will be able to choose to plant wild cherry, holly, silver birch, downy birch or aspen trees during their visit.

The team will offer guidance to visitors on how to plant the tress, as well as providing all tools and equipment required.

This tree planting is suitable for all ages and abilities, and visitors are invited to choose any or all days to come down and help preserve this local Nature Reserve.

Bev Hylton of East Riding Countryside Access Team, said: “Sadly, over recent years many of the ash trees have been affected by ash dieback disease. The good news is that we are now planting a fantastic mix of new trees to ensure the wood continues to be a great home for wildlife.”

Councillor Nick Coultish, Cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, added: “This is a truly important weekend event, which will really help to preserve the future of this important woodland, and I hope that many people will come along over the three days.”

The team recommend those wishing to attend to wear strong footwear and to bring a pair of gloves. It is advised to bring a hot drink and snacks for the day and to dress appropriately for cold weather.

The tree planting area is mainly on low level ground, but there will be the opportunity to plant on the valley slopes for those who wish to.

The event is free to attend and will take place at:

Millington Wood Nature Reserve near Pocklington, Y042 1TZ from 10am-3pm.

The event is a drop-in session and attendees can stay for as long as they wish.
