TESCO PARTNERS EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE COUNCIL TO PROVIDE HEALTHY ACTIVE BREAKFASTS FOR BEVERLEY PRIMARY SCHOOLS
Wed 24th June 2015East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Road Safety Team has joined with Tesco’s Beverley store to deliver a series of fun and healthy ‘active breakfasts’ to primary schools across the Beverley area.
Taking place during June and July, the events give pupils the chance to make their own fruit smoothies by pedalling on a specially designed smoothie making bike and also to start the day with a healthy fruit salad pot. Joining in the fun are Keldmarsh, St Nicholas, Woodmansey, St John's, Walkington, Leconfield and Beverley Minster Primary Schools.
Dave Ryley, Tesco’s community champion said ‘‘We are delighted to sponsor the active breakfasts as they encourage both healthy eating and an active lifestyle for school children. The response at all the schools so far has been fantastic.’’
Steve Wigley, ERYC’s Assistant Road Safety Officer added ‘‘This is a key initiative we deliver at schools each year. Not only does it help support the work we carry out as part of the National Modeshift accreditation and the Cycle Friendly School Award, but these breakfasts help reinforce why being active and eating healthy are so important through life. We continually work with Public Health in supporting the Change 4 Life message and encourage pupils to not only cycle more but to have a more active journey to school either through walking or scooting as well.’’
Keldmarsh Primary School’s Head Teacher, Carol Tomkinson, who hosted the active breakfast held on 24th June, said ‘‘The children thoroughly enjoyed the smoothie making machine and the delicious freshly made smoothies. It was lovely to see so many children taking the opportunity to have an active journey to school. Thank you to Steve Wigley and Dave Ryley for their fantastic support.’’
