Success! Translation Bee National Finalists!

The Routes into Languages East Foreign Language Translation Bee is a competition for students in Year 8 & 9 to build on the work they did in Year 7 with the Routes into Languages National Spelling Bee practising and improving their vocabulary, spelling and memory skills in a foreign language (French, German or Spanish).

For the regional event students were required to translate a 'tool kit' of high frequency phrases from English into the target language in a mixture of time frames (past, present and future) against the clock. All phrases are randomly selected by a computer and students have one minute to translate as many phrases correctly with accurate pronunciation as possible.

Will Day, Isaac Bullough and Joseph Officer represented Beverley Grammar school at the regional final of the Foreign Language Translation Bee Tuesday 6 June at Sheffield Hallam University in their chosen language of French.

Following the regional event Beverley Grammar School Boys Adam Roberts (13), Lewis Matthews (13) and Nathan Thorp (13) are German finalists now through to the National Final which will be taking place on Monday 3rd July at Cambridge University no less!

All the boys have agreed “The Translation Bee is challenging but fun. We have gone further in the competition than we thought we would and we are really glad that we are through to the National Final"

This is the first year that Beverley Grammar School have competed in this national competition; Head of Languages at Beverley Grammar School,  Erin Robertson, commented ‘Adam, Lewis and Nathan have put in a lot of time and effort into their preparations for the Translation Bee which is having a very positive impact on their foreign language skills. I knew that they were good but I did not think that we would get three students through to the national final in the first year that we entered the contest!  I am really proud of them all and am looking forward to the national final in Cambridge on 3rd July.’
