Road improvement scheme to be carried out in Beverley town centre

A £1m scheme to improve roads in Beverley town centre is to get underway next week.

Sections of Norwood, North Bar Without and Lord Roberts Road are to be resurfaced as part of the work, which is due to start on Monday 1 June.

The project is expected to take 11 weeks to complete and will also see improvements to footpaths and paved areas.

To minimise disruption to motorists, residents and businesses, most of the work will be carried out on evenings in order to keep these busy routes through Beverley open to traffic.

The scheme is part of East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s planned highway maintenance works and will be carried out in partnership with Tarmac Trading Ltd.

All work carried out will follow Government guidelines on safe working and social distancing.

Part one

The first part of the scheme will see the resurfacing of Norwood, between New Walkergate and Corporation Road, together with footpath repairs.

Improvements will also be carried out to a section of block paving on New Walkergate, outside houses and businesses, between the Norwood junction and the Tesco store.

To minimise disruption, this first part will be split into five different phases, however temporary traffic lights will be in use.

Preparation works will be carried out on Manor Road between Monday 1 June and Friday 5 June, from 8am to 5pm.

Then the main resurfacing work will begin on Norwood on Sunday 7 June, and will be carried out on weekday evenings, between 6pm to 11pm, and on Sundays from 9am-5pm.

On Sundays only, between 7 and 28 June, this section of New Walkergate will be closed to traffic temporarily from 9am-5pm, with a diversion in place.

Temporary road closures will also be needed along Norwood and Hengate during phase three during working hours. Access inside the area will still be permitted to residents, business owners and emergency services. Bus services will also be affected during phase three.

Part one is due to take 11 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Part two

The road in North Bar Without and its junctions with York Road and Wylies Road will be resurfaced with work due to start on Tuesday 16 June.

The work will be carried out between 6pm-11pm on weekdays, and will take around seven days to complete.

During the hours of work North Bar Without will be closed to through-traffic but access will be kept for residents, businesses and the emergency services.

Part three

The third and final part will involve the resurfacing of a section of Lord Roberts Road next to Wednesday Market.

This work is due to start on Thursday 25 June, with work being carried out on weekday evenings, between 6pm-11pm. It is due to take one week to complete.

During the work Lord Roberts Road will be closed to through-traffic but access will be kept for residents, businesses and the emergency services.

“Roads at the moment are much quieter than normal and this is allowing us to push ahead and get some improvements completed quicker than normal.

“We hope people they will see the improvements once the scheme is completed.”
