Pittaway Beverley 10k Sunday 14 May 2017
Tue 9th May 2017The Pittaway Beverley 10k annual road race takes place this Sunday at 11:15am. Beverley Athletic Club hosts this popular event and this year is the first time it is being supported by painting and decorating contractors, The Pittaway Group.
Graeme Pittaway, Managing Director of Pittaway Group is a keen runner himself and has been a member of Beverley AC for around nine years will be taking part in the race with a few of his colleagues. He says:
“Pittaway Decorators is a local family business with roots in Beverley and the surrounding area and we will be celebrating 100 years of business next year. We have carried out thousands of jobs in East Yorkshire on a full array of projects, from domestic customers to local businesses both large and small, including painting many iconic buildings in the town that the runners will pass on the day.
“We are also proud to directly employ top quality decorators, some of these live in Beverley and some have been with us for nearly 40 years. I’m also pleased to say I’ve even been able to talk some of our team members into running the race with me.
"The Beverley 10K gives runners the opportunity to take in the beautiful surroundings of the town and it's great to see so many people come together to cheer on the runners at the finish. It's a real honour for my family business to be associated with such a prestigious and enjoyable event. I'm really looking forward to it.”
The event has been ever-increasing in size since the first race in 1994 with 440 entrants. This year it has reached its capacity with a record 1750 racers, sold out in 6 hours.
The crowd can expect a fantastic spectacle with a carnival atmosphere in the town centre. Competitors get to see Beverley’s most iconic landmarks and beauty spots as the race heads out of town via North Bar, navigates round The Westwood, before returning to the finish in Wednesday Market. The event is a boost for local businesses and trade as competitors are drawn in from a wide area. The event is always well supported by locals, especially down the finishing straight along Toll Gavel. The proceedings start at 10:30 at Beverley Leisure Centre with the B&A Scaffolding Fun Run; there’ll be plenty to see and do for the whole family.
While Beverley Athletic Club endeavours to keep the disruption to a minimum, it is imperative some roads are closed for the safety of competitors, supporters, marshals and road users alike. Beverley AC will be operating rolling road closures through the town centre from 11:00 until 13:00. These areas particularly affected are:-
• the Minster area
• Keldgate
• Wednesday Market
• Admiral Walker Road
• Lairgate
• The Westwood
Last year's Beverley 10K was won by Kris Lecher from City of Hull AC in a time of 32:44 with Carla Stansfield from the same running club winning the ladies race in a time of 37:52 finishing 27th overall. The weather was a blessing and a curse at the same time for the runners, as one of the hottest days of the year was recorded. This year looks like it will be cooler.
Beverley AC would like to remind all entrants that the use of earphones is not permitted – a requirement of the UKA rules that govern the race.
