Nominations open for Chairman's Awards
Wed 7th January 2015People wishing to make nominations for this year’s Chairman’s Awards have until the end of the month to do so.
The annual awards, which are held at a ceremony at The Spa Bridlington in May, are presented to individuals, businesses and projects that have helped improve the East Riding over the past year.
The awards are split into five categories:
- community – recognises groups and individuals for their contribution to improving the lives of those living in the East Riding with a non-commercial project
- built heritage – celebrates private homes or business premises that have been sympathetically renovated and restored
- environment – recognises projects that have made an impact in the environment
- business – celebrates businesses that have helped the economy flourish
- sport – celebrates local sporting talent, hard work and dedication shown by many young volunteers.
Hugh Rice Jewellers in Beverley were a recent winner of the built heritage award for the work carried out on their premises in Toll Gavel, one of Beverley’s oldest shops, dating back to the late 17th century.
The building, when it was taken over, was in poor condition and needed considerable repair and major structural strengthening, which was carefully carried out without affecting its external appearance.
Jonathon Fisk, senior manager at Hugh Rice Jewellers, said: “A lot of hard work and effort went into restoring the building so it was nice to get the Chairman’s Award to recognise just what we had achieved.”
Chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Councillor Pat O’Neil, said: “People only have until the end of the month to make nominations so I would ask residents to think if there is someone within their community who would be a deserving recipient of an award.”
To submit a nomination, go to www.eastriding.gov.uk/chairmansawards email chairmans.award@eastriding.gov.uk or contact Sarah Asquith, civic officer at East Riding of Yorkshire Council on 01482 393260.
The closing date for nominations is 31 January.
