Free Compost Giveaways Return For East Riding Residents In May

Residents in the East Riding will be able to collect free bags of compost when giveaway events return in May.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s waste and recycling team will once again be holding its popular compost giveaways, with 5,000 bags available over eight events across the area, starting on Monday 11th May.

The team will visit Pocklington, Beverley, Preston, Goole, Hornsea, Carnaby, Withernsea and Driffield until Friday 29th May.

East Riding residents are invited to attend their nearest event, where they can collect two free bags of compost, which will be placed into their car boots by council staff.

Around 60 tonnes is expected to be given out – all of which has been recycled into compost locally from the food and garden waste people put in their brown bins throughout the year.

In February, the council began rolling out weekly brown bin collections of food waste for two-thirds of the East Riding, with the remaining households joining in February next year.

Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “We’re pleased to bring our compost giveaways back for May as they are always a big hit.

“East Riding residents have always been brilliant at supporting our recycling schemes, and that includes the recent launch of our weekly food waste collections, and we very much appreciate that.”

Brown bins can be used to recycle all cooked and uncooked food, out-of-date food, peelings, plate scrapings, bones, meat, bread, eggshells, teabags and small amounts of sauces and gravies, as well as garden waste too such as grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, small branches, leaves, flowers and weeds.

Free compost will be given away at the following events. Please note the differing times:
