A new exhibition exploring the intriguing work of a local medical illustrator will open at the Treasure House, Beverley, on Saturday, 21 September.

Mysteries Inside Us: Medical Illustrations by Annamaria Dutto will showcase an overview of the artist’s professional practice, and includes early pencil drawings from her training in hospitals and contemporary digital pieces produced using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

Annamaria produces illustrations for books, patient leaflets and medical teaching materials – and one of her recent commissions was to produce the illustrations for a series of books which tie in with the popular Channel 4 series, One Born Every Minute.

The exhibition is also a chance to find out more about the workings of the human body, as many of the illustrations depict things not normally seen by the human eye, such as cells, blood vessels and nerves.

Further artist’s work includes a series of pieces exploring the relationship between hearing and understanding music using Beethoven as a starting point.

To complement the theme of the exhibition, there will be a selection of new health and wellbeing books in Beverley Library (available for loan), plus a display of historic material from East Riding Museums in the Treasure House café.

There will be a series of supporting events to the exhibition, which include:

Exhibitions Up Close: the artist will be in the exhibition space on Saturday, 5 October from 10am-12noon, answering questions about the work on display or about her journey into this unusual career. There is also the chance to handle some of the illustrated health and wellbeing objects from the museum collection. No need to book – just turn up.

The Big Draw: the exhibition will form the inspiration for the Big Draw event on Saturday, 12 October in the Treasure House Education Room, 10am-3pm. It will be a creative fun session with no skill needed and no booking required.

The Art of Medical Illustration – Talk by Annamaria Dutto: the artist will give a talk on Saturday, 9 November (2-3.15pm) in the Treasure House Education Room, in which she will explain how she became interested in this field of illustration and her working processes. Tickets, which are £5, are bookable in advance.
