National Adoption Week 2018 - 15 to 21 October

Adoption staff from East Riding of Yorkshire Council are working with neighbouring authorities to encourage more people to consider adopting a child.
Children across the region are waiting for permanent, loving homes, and in the East Riding there is a need for adopters especially for children aged three and above or sibling groups of two or more.
The council is one of five councils in the region which make up One Adoption North and Humber, which is sharing the stories of those who have already started their adoption journey during this year’s National Adoption Week, which takes place from 15 to 21 October.
These stories can be found at the One Adoption website https://www.oneadoption.co.uk/north-humber/adoption-stories, including Annie and Bob who adopted three sisters, Matt and James who adopted through an early permanence placement and Kate and Alfie, who adopted siblings in later life.
During National Adoption Week, One Adoption is also hosting a live Facebook question and answer session on Tuesday 16 October from 11.30am to 1.30pm, where adoption social workers and adoptive parents will be online to respond to questions from people interested in finding out more about adoption. Anyone can take part, through the One Adoption Facebook page.
Information events are also being held, where people can hear about the kind of children who are waiting to be adopted and talk to adoption social workers to find out more.

Wednesday 17 October, Endeavour Learning and Skills Centre, Hull.Drop in between 6pm and 8pm.
Thursday 8 November, East Riding Treasure House, Champney Road, Beverley, 5.30 to 7.30pm.
Adoption is an exciting, challenging, life-long commitment. By adopting through One Adoption parents are supported throughout the whole process by a highly experienced, dedicated adoption support team. There is a comprehensive programme of pre and post adoption training and support, from stay and play sessions to more in depth workshops.
Councillor Julie Abraham, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s portfolio holder for children, young people and education, said: “National Adoption Week is so important in reminding people about the backgrounds of the children waiting for adoption and the difference adoption can make to a child’s life. We know from existing adoptive families that it can be hard work, but the rewards are huge. This is a chance to transform a child’s life forever.”
Suzie Grove, adoption service manager for York and North Yorkshire, on behalf of One Adoption North and Humber, said: “We would love to hear from anyone interested in learning more about adoption. We need all kinds of different families to meet the varied needs of children across our region. As five councils collaborating together we will speed up the adoption process for children in our care in some localities, and help children be matched to the right adoptive parents more quickly.”
