Mayor Cllr Tom Astell Competition Template Form

Beverley's new Mayor, Councillor Tom Astell, has launched a competition for local children to create a tourism leaflet promoting Beverley’s landmarks. The idea was inspired by a hand drawn leaflet posted onto social media by local 10 year old Daisy.

Cllr Astell, explained how the idea took shape;

"It was a wonderful surprise for me to see such a special leaflet from Daisy promoting Beverley.

"Daisy had handwritten the leaflet herself, and had drawn some lovely pictures of some of our famous landmarks such as the Minster, and cows on the Westwood. It was really lovely to see how Daisy had written so fluently about our historic town, and it was a privilege to be able to thank her when I spoke to her and her Dad subsequently on a Zoom call.

"I was so impressed, that I mentioned Daisy's leaflet to all the Councillors at the Beverley Town Council virtual meeting on Monday evening.

"Daisy's leaflet was of such a high standard, that it gave me the idea of running a competition in Beverley's primary schools. The competition will be open to all pupils from year 1 to year 6, and I will choose four winners, two from both key stage 1 and 2.

"It's fantastic that children, like Daisy, want to engage with the history of our town, and I hope that the competition will inspire our children to help us promote Beverley to potential visitors. Children can mention all the great things that Beverley has to offer, and might also want to focus on specific areas of interest such as The Minster, St Mary's Church, The Beck, North Bar and  Westwood.”

The competition will close on Tuesday 30th June 2020 and winners will be announced on Tuesday 7th July 2020. More details on the competition and a template leaflet can be found on the Town Council’s website at www.beverley.gov.uk.
