May Day sees first major event at Beverley Racecourse for 2015
Thu 30th April 2015May Day this year sees a family day being held at Beverley Racecourse. On Monday 4 May the Yorkshire racecourse will host traditional May Day celebrations, suitable for all the family.
The 2015 season has started as it means to go on with two events in April attracting large crowds. The Racecourse is looking better than ever following £650,000 of investment in Premier Enclosure facilities. May Day Raceday on 4 May promises to be a great day out, with gates opening at 10am for a hearty breakfast. Visitors can enjoy bacon sandwiches and waffles, amongst other breakfast treats available from Cleverley's Bistro and the Hurn Bar, before enjoying a fabulous family day out.
Young visitors are invited to meet Golden Hello, the retired racehorse, and Meg, his pony friend, who will be coming along to raise money for the charity New Beginnings. There will also be a petting zoo, bungee trampolines, Maypole dancing, ferret racing, face painting, stilt walkers and racing to enjoy from 12.30pm.
Acclaimed pop star, actress and folk singer Barbara Dickson will be making a guest appearance at the event to attend a race named in her honour.
The racecourse is hosting a variety of other days in the racing calender throughout May, including Afternoon Racing on 12 May, and A Very British Raceday on 23 May. This race is traditionally used by trainers to prepare their fillies for Royal Ascot, and this year will feature the Hilary Needler Trophy for two year old fillies for the first time.
The day is an opportunity to engage younger visitors with the thrills of racing, including a Donkey Derby, which will see professional jockeys riding donkeys, Punch and Judy, coconut shies, hook a duck and music for a singalong after racing.
