LOCAL ARTIST'S PRESTIGIOUS EXHIBITION
Thu 31st October 2019Contemporary landscape painter Phil Entwistle is about to have a solo show in the Lake District. It will be based on his work in the professional practice group at Hull College over the last three years. For those who cannot travel to the Lakes, some of the paintings can be seen in advance at the Prospect Centre in Hull.
The work will then travel to the Severn Studio at Brantwood on Coniston Water. Brantwood was the home of the great nineteenth-century thinker and social reformer John Ruskin, who has been described as “the genius who opened Britain's eyes to the wonders of nature”
The exhibition, 'Above and Below', features Phil's dramatic oil paintings of the slate quarries that Coniston is famed for, alongside an intriguing series of topographical drawings. Inspired by Ruskin's belief that art should help us to see more clearly, the exhibition questions our perceptions of the landscape, and reflects on our relationship with it.
The work has been made specially for this beautiful venue, with its spectacular views of the mountains. For walkers, climbers, and anyone who enjoys the Lake District, this is an exhibition not to be missed.
Phil has had exhibitions at Hull Truck Theatre and Beverley Minster, and in posters on the railway stations of the Hull to Scarborough line. Paintings will be on show at Prospect Gallery, Prospect Street, Hull until 7th November (open Tuesdays to Thursdays from 10am to 4pm).
'Above and Below' runs at Brantwood from 14th November to 12th January, Wednesdays to Sundays from 10:30am to 4pm. Entry is with a house or garden ticket.
