LibDems gain St Mary's East Riding of Yorkshire Council seat from Tories

Fri 21st October 2016
By Election

With a 28.7% swing to the LibDems, Denis Healy is the newly-elected Councillor for St Mary's Ward. The result, declared shortly before midnight, was as follows:

LibDem: 40% (+28.7%)

Cons: 25.3% (-3.2%)

Lab: 18.4% (+0.6%)

Bev Party: 9.7% (-1.2%)

Ind: 3.8% (+3.8%)

UKIP: 2.7% (-10.3%)

The total turnout was 29.23%

The by-election in St Mary's ward, which covers Molescroft and part of Beverley itself, was caused by the sad death of the sitting Conservative Councillor Irene Charis in August.

The victory comes on the back of Lib Dem success earlier in the year in neighboring Hull, where the Lib Dems made two gains from Labour,  and a string of Lib Dem council by-election wins up and down the country since May.

Denis said:
"I am obviously delighted by the result and I promise to work hard for all residents, regardless of whether or not they supported me. This is a huge victory, it shows the Lib Dems are back and winning seats in the East Riding, Hull and across the country. More importantly the result will ensure a stronger opposition on the Council, standing up for local residents."
