Leisure Complex links up with College
Wed 7th January 2015Sports students at East Riding College will be taking advantage of the excellent facilities at East Riding Leisure Beverley from the next academic year.
The College has reached an agreement with East Riding of Yorkshire Council, which owns the leisure centre, that will take effect when the College’s new Beverley campus opens in September 2015.
It means that those studying towards sport coaching, development and fitness qualifications at Beverley will take theory lessons in the modern £14m campus and benefit from practical sessions using the indoor and outdoor facilities at the nearby leisure centre.
Nicola Cooper, head of leisure and business at the college, said: “This is fantastic news for anyone who is considering taking a sport qualification next year, whether they are a young person leaving school in the summer or an adult thinking about a change of a career.
“These really are some of the best facilities in the region and I’m delighted that East Riding College learners will benefit from them and our new Beverley campus from next September.”
Councillor Richard Burton, portfolio holder for civic wellbeing and culture, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to reach this agreement with East Riding College, and to work in partnership with them.
“The facilities at East Riding Leisure Beverley are already excellent, and will be second to none on completion of the new Tone Zone next year, and I know that the sports students will benefit hugely from being able to use the facility – and they will be welcomed with open arms.”
Kieran Kent, 18, from Driffield, who is currently studying a Level Three Extended Diploma in Sport Development, Coaching and Fitness at the College, said: “I am planning on progression on to the Foundation Degree in Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at East Riding College next year after I finish my level three qualification.
“I’m looking forward to studying at the new college campus and using the facilities at East Riding Leisure Beverley for the practical aspects of the course.’’
The partnership will mean that students will use the leisure centre’s facilities across the wide range of sessions, learning how to play and coach on a wide variety of team and individual sports, how to assess fitness and how to develop individual training plans.
This includes the multi-use games area for tennis and netball, the indoor sports hall for badminton and basketball, and the outdoor sports pitch for hockey, football and rugby, as well as the 25m swimming pool.
Learners will also have the opportunity to complete additional qualifications, such as the National Pool Lifeguard Qualifications and Certificate in Fitness Instructing which are industry recognised qualifications.
A £1.2m scheme of major improvements at East Riding Leisure Beverley started in August and will see the state of the art Tone Zone health and fitness facility double in size – with around 90 stations – and will offer a wide range of high-tech resistance and cardiovascular equipment, as well as a purpose built spin room.
