Families can once again have fun at the popular Kids Go Wild discovery days where habitats and wildlife on the local nature reserves can be enjoyed by all.
Run by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s local nature reserve team, the events will take place during the school summer holidays and include animal trails, safaris and art activities.
The programme of summer events gets underway on Friday, 24 July with a Fairy Garden Workshop at the Humber Bridge Country Park Local Nature Reserve (HU13 0HB). Families are invited to explore the wildflower meadow where 3,000 wildflowers have been planted and wildlife artist Michele Davy will be there to help visitors make a flower fairy garden to take home.
On Friday, 31 July there is a Butterfly Safari with art activities at the Humber Bridge Country Park Local Nature Reserve. Follow a trail around the wildflower meadow and see tortoiseshells, red admirals and peacock butterflies whilst taking part in the Big Butterfly Count. Participants can enjoy making a colourful butterfly to take home with Michele Davy.
On Tuesday, 4 August at Eastrington Ponds Local Nature Reserve near Howden (DN14 7PL), participants can enjoy exploring the ponds with the Pond Safari and art activities. From the safety of the shore, look for water scorpions, water stick insects and dragonfly nymphs. Pond dipping nets and equipment is provided. Afterwards, spend time on the reserve with Michele Davy and use environmental art materials to re-create the creatures.
Visitors can explore the woods and meadows of Humber Bridge Country Park Local Nature Reserve on Friday, 14 August at the Minibeast Safari and art activities where they can join in a minibeast hunt and take a closer look at bugs. Collecting pots, ID sheets and other equipment is provided. Use natural materials to craft a creature, making a clay minibeast to take home, tutored by Michele Davy.
The programme concludes on Friday, 28 August at the Humber Bridge Country Park Local Nature Reserve with Wildlife Art in the Park. Participants will be inspired by their surroundings and get creative using an array of natural materials to make a giant land-art creature. Choose from worms, frogs, snails or newts. There will be the chance to make smaller creatures to take home too.
