East Riding of Yorkshire Council is encouraging residents to switch to paperless billing for their council tax.
Over 30,000 residents have already made the switch, helping the council to save money in paper, printing and postage costs.
Starting in February, residents who have signed up for online services will be automatically moved to paperless billing, followed by those households that have shared their email addresses with the council tax team. These households will receive an email notification, with an option to opt out.
Councillor Nigel Wilkinson, cabinet member for finance, said: “This change is part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and providing residents with a more convenient and efficient service. We are asking residents to move to paperless billing, as it will also help save money. Like all councils, East Riding needs to make efficiencies where it can.
“Households will benefit from easier management of their accounts, with bills accessible in one place. Some households will be automatically switched to paperless billing, but for those who prefer paper bills, they can opt out via the email they receive.
“We understand that not all residents use online services, and that’s okay. For those who can switch, it will help us use resources more effectively.”
Households signed up for paperless billing will receive an email notification when a new council tax bill is available.
Residents will receive information about paperless council tax billing through East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s waste app, through social media channels and email.
Residents have until 1pm on 24th February to make the switch to paperless billing before the 2025/26 annual council tax billing in March, or to opt out via their email.
