Hull Truck Theatre's Comedy Drama Season is All About Morecambe and Wise, Mr Darcy and Tony Blair
Tue 29th May 2018If a good old giggle’s what you’re after, Hull Truck Theatre has a trio of side-splitting shows especially for you. From a look at the education system during Blair’s Britain, to Pride and Prejudice misplacing a main character, and a wonderful tribute to everyone’s favourite comedy duo, you’ll be rolling in the aisles this June.
Education, Education, Education (Tuesday 5 – Wednesday 6 June) takes us back to May 1997. Tony Blair has won the election and Katrina and the Waves have won Eurovision. Channel 5 is a month old, no one knows who Harry Potter is, and Britain is the coolest place in the world. But at the local secondary school it's a different story. This love letter to the schools of the ‘90s asks big questions about a country in special measures, exploring what we are taught and why, and where responsibility lies. Everyone will love this inventive and humorous exploration of political history presented by The Wardrobe Ensemble, winner of a Fringe First award in 2017.
The celebrated LipService Productions return with Mr Darcy Loses the Plot (Friday 8 – Saturday 9 June), which begins with Jane Austen dreaming up Mr Darcy when she’s suddenly interrupted by her sister. The literary character is left to his own devices, so he starts to embroider his own storyline. Increasingly fed up with his role in Pride and Prejudice, Darcy dives into a lake and emerges in a totally different story; he is now Maxim de Winter in Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca. Finding himself on trial for murder, he hastens back to Jane Austen, only to find the glorious Mr Wickham has eloped into another story – he turns up as the Foxy Whiskered Gentleman in Beatrix Potter’s Jemima Puddleduck. The sublime silliness of LipService is at its finest in their latest comedy classic.
An Evening of Eric and Ern (Saturday 16 June) is a brilliant homage to TV legends Morecambe and Wise. Full of madcap routines, catchy songs and hilarious sketches, this show is guaranteed to evoke memories of huddling round the telly with the family on a Sunday evening. Expect tons of laughs and a musical guest, brought to you by the Olivier nominated duo behind the critically acclaimed West End Hit, Eric and Little Ern.
Mark Babych, Artistic Director, says: “Comedy and drama are at the core of our artistic programme, and these shows perfectly fuse the two platforms. Whatever your style of humour, bring your friends along to enjoy brilliant stories and endless laughter.”
