Heritage Open Days 2018 at Beverley Guildhall and the Council Chamber in County Hall

As part of the programme of Heritage Open Days 2018, Beverley will be opening the doors to some of the town's most recognisable buildings.

Heritage Open Days, organised by the Beverley and Hull Civic Societies, and the National Trust, open historic buildings that may otherwise be closed to the public, and provide events such as walks and guided tours free of charge.

The Guildhall in Beverley will be opening its doors from 10 am to 4pm on Saturday, 8 September. Re-modelled in the 18th and 19th centuries, the Guildhall features an ornate stucco plaster ceiling by Giuseppe Cortese, silver collection and 17th century furniture.

There is also an opportunity to ‘meet’ Elizabeth Clark, a 19th century woman from the local workhouse who is appearing in the Guildhall courtroom.

County Hall, home to East Riding of Yorkshire Council, will similarly be welcoming the public into its original 1889 Council Chamber on Friday, 7 September. Little altered since its conception, its classical decorations and hand carved furniture by James E. Elwell, the father of Beverley artist Fred Elwell, makes for a stunning space.

Guided tours and admission times for the Council Chamber will be at 10 am, 11:30 am, 1.30 pm, and 3 pm, and sessions will last 45 minutes, with disabled access to the hall provided.

Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Tourism and Culture, Councillor Richard Burton, said: “It’s great to show off local history and allow residents to appreciate and enjoy places that they regularly pass but may otherwise have been unable to enter.”
