Hemingway Bailey rise to challenge
Fri 8th August 2014Evie Molloy and Alan Hemingway from accountancy firm Hemingway Bailey, plus friends Helen and James, battled the stormy weather at the weekend to complete the three peaks challenge - climbing Ben Nevis, Sca Fell Pike and Snowdon in 24 hours.
They managed to raise over £1,300 for Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis, a charity which is very close to Evie’s heart. They are a fairly small charity, supporting people with a fairly unknown disease. There is no known cause for this disease and no cure. The research into improving the length and quality of life for patients is also very limited.
Evie said: “My grandad was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis 15 years ago, and was given five years to live. He battled through and saw myself and my younger sister grow up, before he lost his battle in February this year. This is why this charity is so important to me.
“The challenge itself was one of the hardest things I have ever done and I would not have been able to do it without my friends who got me through the actual challenge, encouraging texts and messages from loved ones at home and the thought of how many lives I could change by raising money for this worthy charity.
“The challenge took us 27 hours, three hours over schedule, mainly due to horrific weather. It rained during both the Ben Nevis climb and the Sca Fell Pike climb (which was in the dark), Snowdon was the real test for me, as the exhaustion of only a few hours’ sleep during the challenge took its toll. Overall, we walked over 25 miles and climbed (and descended) over 3,000 metres.
“My grandad knew that I was doing this challenge for him, as I had started training before he died. I just wish that he could have been here now, to see me do it & to see all the money we have raised in memory of him.”
Evie has a Just Giving page, which is still active, and she would welcome any further donations. She had an initial £1,000 target, which she has now exceeded, as the generosity of people has been overwhelming. She hopes that this can continue over the coming months and she can raise as much money (and awareness) for this charity as possible. Visit her Just Giving page.
“I would like to stress again how much I appreciated Alan, Helen and James, throughout this challenge, as it would have been pretty impossible without them,” she added.
Hemingway Bailey chartered management accountants sponsored the challenge and therefore all the money they have raised can go straight to the charity, as the company covered all the costs involved.
