Healthy and Active Breakfasts for Beverley Primary Schools
Wed 20th July 2016East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Road Safety Team has joined with Tesco’s Beverley store to deliver a series of fun and healthy ‘active breakfasts’ to primary schools across the Beverley area.
Taking place during July, the events give pupils the chance to make their own fruit smoothies by pedalling on a specially designed smoothie making bike and also to start the day with a healthy fruit salad pot. Joining in the fun are St Nicholas, Keldmarsh, St John’s, Woodmansey, Walkington, Leconfield and Beverley Minster Primary Schools.
Dave Ryley, Tesco’s community champion said ‘‘We are delighted to sponsor the active breakfasts as they encourage both healthy eating and an active lifestyle for school children. The response at all the schools so far has been fantastic.’’
Steve Wigley, ERYC’s Assistant Road Safety Officer added ‘‘This is a key initiative we deliver at schools each year. Not only does it help support the work we carry out as part of the National Modeshift accreditation, but these breakfasts help reinforce why being active and eating healthy are so important through life. We continually work with Public Health in supporting the Change 4 Life message and encourage pupils to not only cycle more but to have a more active journey to school either through cycling, walking or scooting as well.’’
St Nicholas Primary School’s Head Teacher Liz Pollard, who hosted the active breakfast held on 18th July, said ‘‘This is a super opportunity for us to continue our work with Tesco and Steve Wigley from ERYC to promote and develop children’s understanding of healthy lifestyles.’’
