Green-fingered pupils bring Flemingate into bloom

Young budding gardeners showcased their green fingers to create a school garden at Beverley’s Flemingate centre, as part of a growing project taking learning outdoors.
Pupils from Beverley’s St Nicholas Community Primary School donned gardening gloves and grabbed trowels and spades to fill six purpose-made beds with plants, shrubs and flowers at the popular centre.
The project gave the children hands-on experience of gardening and an insight into the visual and tactile elements of nature.
Graham Tait, Centre Manager at Flemingate, said: “It was great to be involved with this school garden project.
“We’ve worked with St Nicholas Primary School several times over the years and this is a hands-on project the children can get really involved in.
“The pupils helped choose a garden design and selected all the plants themselves based on colour arrangement, foliage and the type of soil, so it was very much an educational project.
“It will be interesting to watch the school garden grow and flourish through the year.”
Liz Pollard, Headteacher at St Nicholas Community Primary School, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to work alongside specialist gardeners to develop a garden for our community to enjoy.
“The children thoroughly enjoyed choosing their plants and getting involved. We would like to thank Graham Tait for giving our children this opportunity.”
The pupils, aged from five to 10, chose the plants and flowers from a planting scheme designed by Hornsea-based specialist garden designer Matt Haddon.
Matt said: “It was great to see the children show such enthusiasm and interest in the project. Some of them could become the next generation of landscape designers!”
Once fully planted, the pupils will tend the school garden with help from Ellerker-based grounds maintenance and landscaping company, Wintergreen, which maintains the Flemingate site.
The St Nicholas Community Primary School Garden can be found adjacent to the footpath on Armstrong Way.
