Graham Stuart shows support for Beverley & Holderness farmers on Back British Farming Day
Thu 17th September 2020The annual celebration of British farming, Back British Farming day, took place on Wednesday 9th September, and local MP for Beverley and Holderness, Graham Stuart, joined his colleagues in offering his thanks for their hard work throughout the coronavirus pandemic.
The National Farmers’ Union provided MPs with a ‘Back British Farming’ wool and wheatsheaf pin badge (shown in photo) to publicly display their support at a crucial time for the agricultural sector with trade negotiations, including crucial talks with the EU, continuing.
The UK food and farming industry is worth £112 billion to the national economy – employing more than 4 million people – and it has gone through turbulent times as business closures elsewhere have forced farmers to react flexibly to surges and drops in demand and supply.
Commenting, Graham said: “I am extremely proud to wear the Back British Farming pin badge in support of the farming sector.
“Farmers in Beverley and Holderness have kept supermarket shelves stocked in difficult circumstances as they’ve coped with difficulties in supply and staff shortages due to illness and travel restrictions.
“The Agriculture Bill currently going through Parliament is pushing through the biggest changes to farming in a decade, so that we can invest in healthy and sustainable British food production which cares for nature and the environment.
“The Government has committed to upholding the UK’s high levels of animal welfare and food safety in any and all trade deals, and as Exports Minister I look forward to championing high-quality British produce across the world.”
