Graham Stuart MP supports 2019's 'Love our Colleges' Week
Fri 18th October 2019Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, has voiced his support for colleges across Yorkshire – including Bishop Burton College in Beverley.
This comes after having been written to by a collection of principals of colleges from across East Riding, North Yorkshire and York urging him to support the sector during the annual celebration which this year ran from 14th -18th October.
Graham said, “Colleges and other kinds of Further Education institutions are hugely important for the country as they equip people with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in the world of work.
“As the former Chair of the Education Select Committee, I still take a keen interest in all things education, and so I was delighted when the Government announced a £400 million funding boost for colleges.
“They educate over 600,000 16-18 year-olds every year, and around 2.2 million people in total, and that’s why I’m showing my support for colleges for Colleges Week 2019.”
The £400 million boost for colleges and Further Education institutions comes alongside the Government’s announcement of £14 billion of investment for schools over 3 years, taking the schools budget to £52 billion.
The Government has also announced that colleges will receive another £100 million to fund extra pensions’ provision rather than having to fund it from their existing budgets.
Graham added, “Colleges make a huge contribution to society and now more than ever we need highly skilled, well-educated workforces to deliver for our economy and country.
“We’re committed to investing in further education and skills for the long-term so that anybody, no matter where they’re from, can thrive in whatever career they choose.”
