Graham is urging residents to back Beverley’s bid to become a UK Town of Culture, launching his own survey to gather views and show strong local support for the town’s application.
Beverley is one of the finest historic market towns in the country, with a heritage that stretches back centuries. From the magnificent Minster, which dominates the skyline, to the town’s historic streets, markets and racecourse, Beverley has long been a centre of culture, community and civic pride.
Today, that tradition continues. The East Riding Theatre, local festivals, independent shops, musicians, artists and community groups all play their part in keeping Beverley’s cultural life strong and distinctive.
The Town of Culture bid, led by Beverley Town Council, would build on that heritage. If successful, it would support a year of cultural events and activities, helping bring more visitors to the town, backing local organisations and strengthening the local economy.
Graham is working closely with Beverley’s Mayor, Cllr Alison Healy, and St Mary’s Ward Councillor and local Liberal Democrat leader Denis Healy to support the bid and build momentum behind it.
Through his survey, Graham is asking residents what they value most about Beverley and what they would like to see included in a Town of Culture programme.
Graham said: “Beverley is a special place. Whether it is the Minster, our historic markets, the racecourse or the East Riding Theatre, there is a huge amount here that people are rightly proud of.
“It is not just about history. Beverley has a strong cultural life today, shaped by local people, businesses and community groups who give the town its character.
“A Town of Culture bid would help us build on that. It would celebrate what we have, support local organisations and bring more people into the town to see everything Beverley has to offer.
“That is why I have launched a survey to hear directly from residents about what makes Beverley special and what they want to see in the future.
“If you live in Beverley, I would encourage you to take a couple of minutes to fill it in. Strong local backing will make a real difference.”
