After a summer of team work as part of the Humberside Police Lifestyle Challenge, 5 besties have managed to raise enough funds to hold a Disco, and hope to reinvest the proceeds to arrange further events in the future.

Lifestyle, set up in 1989, is designed to challenge young people to get involved with their communities, using their spare time to make a real difference. The now annual project is about more than diverting young people from crime and antisocial behaviour, but about inspiring them to get involved in their community in a positive way.

Freedom Five consists of five girls whose project aim was to get kids off technology. The five girls started planning out possible activities for other ‘tweens’ to take part in.

“We wanted to do something really cool.” Chloe, one of the five girls, said.

With bake sales and Hula-Hoop challenges at the Beverley Raft Races, as well as bag packing at Tescos, the girls will see the results of their hard work on Wednesday 31st from 2pm.

“We are running a disco at Armstrong’s Social Club in Beverley.” Millie, another of the five girls from the South-East side of Beverley said. “It is £1.00 to get in and it there is going to be an amazing DJ, so come and have fun.”
“We wanted to have something to do in the summer holidays.” Aimee said. “So we collaborated to create a mind blowing disco.”

According to Holly they had other ideas too, but their enthusiasm was hard to fit around regulations and other laws.

“We wanted to do a lot of different things, and many places we talked to were keen to help us, but sometimes it takes a lot more planning than we had time to do.”

The Freedom Five are already seeking a venue for their next disco, so with the support of Beverley’s local businesses it looks like their aims to give the children of Beverley something to do has been a success.

“The profits raised from the disco will be put forward to pay for a different disco in the future.” added Laura.

The Disco will be at Armstrongs Social Club, (Near Flemingate) Wednesday 31st August. from 2-4pm with a £1 entry fee.
