Football In Beverley
Tue 13th September 2016Phillip Matthews and Jason Richardson run two Beverley football teams which have both been sponsored by local companies.
After his retirement from years of playing football, Phillip Matthews started to help out with the after school football club at St Johns RC School with Jason Richardson. After months of training the boys, Phillip and Jason decided to put a team in the Hull Boys League and approached Beverley Whitestar, who have been around many years and have football teams for both sexes all the way from under 7s to under 18s.
They then decided to create Beverley Whitestar Cobras in 2013, starting with children from the St Johns after school club. In their first season, judged on their players, spectators and coaches professionalism on and off the field, they found themselves winning the fair play award for the age group, beating 49 other teams.
After the initial season, Beverley Whitestar Cobras went from 11 players to 15 in the second season, and 24 in the 3rd season. This resulted in them having to make 2 teams (for the 2015/16) season, finally this season they have 26 players in their books, 13 in each team.
The Cobras team is managed and coached by Jason Richardson and sponsored by Sham Alom from Rumis and the Vipers team is managed by Phil Matthews and coached by Gary Jay and are sponsored by Mike Wells of NLC Timber Products.
Both teams are currently playing in the under 12 age group in the Hull and District Youth Football League, Cobras in Division 3, Vipers Division 5, most of the players are local to Beverley with 3 new players from last season coming from Hull. Both Cobras and Vipers train and share the same home pitch which is Longcroft, they are not looking for players at the moment, but will be for the next season.
