Fond Farewell to Popular Principal
Fri 22nd December 2017East Riding College bid a fond farewell to its long-serving Principal Derek Branton on Friday. After almost 14 years at the helm, Mr. Branton leaves the College in a very strong position, having successfully led the College through the many changes affecting the further education sector during his time in charge.
He has overseen a number of major advances at the College – not least the development of two new campuses. The College had another excellent Ofsted inspection in February 2016. For over a decade successive Ofsted inspections have graded all aspects of the College’s provision either outstanding or good, indicating the consistently high standards achieved by the College’s students and staff.
A dedication to continuously developing the curriculum has meant the College is also playing a leading role in providing the education and skills training which is closely aligned to supporting the economic and social development of the region. Only last month it became the first college in Yorkshire to gain chartered status, becoming a member of the Chartered Institution of Further Education, confirming its position as a leading performer in the sector.
Mr. Simon Wright, Chair of Governors at East Riding College said, “We wish Derek well in his retirement and thank him for the contribution he has made to education and skills development in the East Riding during his time at the College. He has ensured we are in an excellent position to tackle the challenges ahead. Alongside the delivery of the property strategy, Derek has shown an unwavering drive for improvements in quality and enabled East Riding College to establish itself as a leader in the economic and social development of the region. The College has built a reputation for providing high quality education and skills training, meeting the needs of individuals, employers and the wider community. It is now working with over 450 businesses, including some of the largest employers in the area.”
Mr. Branton said, “I have been genuinely touched by the many kind words said and tributes paid about my leadership of the College since I announced my retirement – it has been almost overwhelming at times. Deciding when to retire has been a difficult decision for me but after, what will be almost 14 years when I leave at Christmas, now does feel like the right time.
During my time as Principal there have been so many changes, particularly with the two new college campuses in Bridlington and Beverley which have brought about superb learning facilities which will be there for our communities to use and enjoy for many years to come. Perhaps what I am most proud of though is the achievements of our students and the remarkable dedication of our exceptionally talented staff. For over a decade now the high standards achieved and consistently excellent Ofsted ratings have been testimony to a college which has its priorities in the right place. By working closely with employers we have also ensured the education we offer and skills we develop are pertinent to today's fast changing economy. This has meant our students have outstanding progression directly into work or studying at a higher level, either within the College or at University.
I am confident that my successor, Mike Welsh, who takes up his post in January will continue to place the College where it belongs at the heart of the businesses and communities it serves in the East Riding."
