Festive glass baubles donated to Sewerby Hall and Gardens

Staff at Sewerby Hall and Gardens have thanked the public for their response to a recent appeal for old Christmas objects to be used in festive exhibitions at the venue.

A fine collection of glass baubles has been donated by a local resident  – including some which are believed to be Edwardian – and will now be catalogued before going on display next year.

Curator Janice Smith said: “We are delighted to receive this wonderful donation, which we will make good use of in future Christmas displays.

“We would still be interested in any old Christmas decorations, cards, paper - anything, really, from the 19th century through to the 1970s and 1980s. Please have a look in your attic or cupboards and let’s see if we can add a whole extra element to our Christmas exhibitions!”

This year, the festive exhibition at Sewerby Hall and Gardens is The Making of Christmas, looking at how the Victorians adopted ancient customs at Christmastime, and grafted on a few of their own to make the Christmas still enjoyed today.

Anybody who would like to donate an item is asked to email Janice on Janice.smith@eastriding,gov.uk  or education officer Robert Chester on Robert.chester@eastriding.gov.uk with brief details of what they can add to the Christmas collection.

‘The Making of Christmas’ will be on display in the house at weekends only until early January.
