East Riding residents thanked for supporting free compost giveaways

East Riding residents once again showed their support for the annual free compost giveaways.
Nine events were held across the area during May by the waste and recycling team at East Riding of Yorkshire Council and were as busy as ever.
The team handed out 60 tonnes of compost for free – all recycled from the food and garden waste that residents place in their brown bins.
The giveaways started Pocklington before moving on to Brough/Elloughton, Withernsea, Beverley, Preston, Goole, Hornsea, Carnaby and finishing in Driffield, where drivers were invited along to collect two free bags of compost.
The events were a real team effort, with staff from the council’s waste and recycling, refuse, street cleaning and grounds and forestry teams all pitching in.
The contents of residents’ brown bins are collected by the council and then get recycled into compost by the Biowise plant in Willerby – where all the compost given away at the events came from.
Carl Skelton the council’s director of streetscene services, said: “This was one of our busiest years yet for the giveaways and we want to say a big thank you to everyone who came along for showing their support.
“We hold them every year because it’s the council’s way of thanking people for keeping up the good work they do by recycling their waste.”
Brown bins can take grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, small branches, leaves, flowers and weeds, all cooked and uncooked food, peelings, plate scrapings, bones, bread, meat, eggshells and small amounts of soups, sauces and gravies.
