East Riding College in Top 20 Nationally for Achievement

East Riding College have climbed the rankings again in national achievement rates tables published by the Government recently.  The College now appears in the list of the top 20 general further education colleges in the country for achievement rates.  Achievement rates are one of the most stringent measures of student success and show the percentage of students that were awarded their qualifications.  The national tables show that East Riding College’s students had an overall achievement rate of 91% in the academic year 2018-19, putting them above both the average overall achievement rate for Yorkshire, and for England.  Furthermore, the students’ overall achievement rate places the College in the top 11% of all general further education colleges nationally.

There was more good news, with 94% of the College’s adults achieving their qualifications.  This placed the College in the top 10% nationally for adult achievement, and No.1 in Yorkshire for this marker. 

Helen Wooldridge, Vice-Principal at the College said, “The results are testament to the hard work our students put into their studies and the quality of teaching and support they receive, including the ‘wrap-around’ pastoral support, which helps them stay on track and achieve their qualifications.  Our students tell me all the time at various forums that they are well supported, and how much they appreciate their tutors - and every year our improving achievement rates bear that out.  In the last four years we have improved our overall achievement rate by 9 percentage points, which is quite an achievement in itself, both for our learners and for the College.”

In other measures published by the government, the College’s GCSE maths high grades achievement is also in the top 10% in the country.  This means that students gaining high grades (9-4) have done so at a rate that puts the College in the top 10 general further education colleges nationally.  

Helen continued, “High achievement in maths in particular is especially pleasing for us, as our English and maths GCSE students are often retaking exams after multiple attempts at school.  It shows that College is a fresh start and the right environment for some learners – where they are treated like adults who are very much responsible for their own learning, studying subjects that they are passionate about with the support of skilled, specialist practitioners.”
