Council supports King’s Trust programme to help young people start careers in Adult Social Care

Council Supports King S Trust Programme To Help Young People Start Careers In Adult Social Care

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has partnered with the King’s Trust to support its ‘Get Ready’ programme, which helps 16 to 30-year-olds take their first steps into employment.

As part of this work, the council delivered a dedicated Adult Social Care Focus Day on Tuesday, 27 January, offering young people a practical and honest introduction to careers in the sector.

The event was coordinated by Workforce and Education Officer, Debbie Foster and delivered with support from the Direct Payments Team, Lifeline Team, and external partner New Concept Care and Nursing (NCCN).

Young people taking part were able to explore the wide range of roles within adult social care, understand career pathways, and learn what day‑to‑day work in the sector involves. As part of the online programme, the participants were also provided one‑to‑one application support interviews.

Follow‑up interviews took place on Friday, 30 January, delivered jointly with Jen Walsh from NCCN. A direct outcome of this partnership work is that NCCN has since offered one young participant a part‑time Learning Disabilities Support Worker role.

Feedback from those taking part was extremely positive, highlighting that the session helped them develop a much clearer understanding of adult social care and the opportunities available.

This work demonstrates the value of strong collaboration with external partners to support recruitment, grow the workforce, and create clear pathways into rewarding adult social care careers.

Councillor Jonathan Owen, cabinet member for adult social care and health at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Supporting young people into meaningful and fulfilling work is a priority for us, and partnerships like this make a real difference.

‘’Adult Social Care offers a wide range of rewarding career opportunities, and it’s fantastic to see young people gaining confidence and taking their first steps into the sector. We’re proud to work alongside organisations like the King’s Trust and NCCN, and we look forward to building on this success in the months ahead.”

Chanan Kaur, youth development lead at The King’s Trust, added: “Working with the Choose Care team at East Riding of Yorkshire Council has been a really positive experience.

‘’The team have shown exceptional commitment to ensuring all young people involved achieve a positive outcome. Overall, the programme has been a great success, with our partnership helping to empower a young person to take her first steps into a career as a Support Worker.”

Jen Walsh, HR officer at NCCN, said: ‘’As a result of our partnership working with the Choose Care team and The Kings Trust, we are pleased to offer one of the applicants a learning disability support worker role and we look forward to seeing her flourish in her career pathway.’’

The council will continue to work with partners to expand opportunities for residents and strengthen the adult social care workforce.
