Council seeks your views on Humber Bridge Country Park Experience project proposals

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is asking people for their views on its plans for The Humber Bridge Country Park Experience – a project that will restore heritage assets, including Whiting Mill, and improve public access around the popular site.
The council successfully secured funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in December 2015 to develop a round one proposal. On completion, this will be submitted to the HLF for a second round funding bid to deliver a scheme.
After consulting with the local community, volunteers and visitors to the country park, the council is proposing the following:
The creation of The Chalk Walk – a new walking route around the 48-acre site that looks at the country park’s geology and its historical links to the mining of chalk. This will include new information boards, audio points that tell people’s stories and memories (accessible and downloadable via QR code markers) and a mural for the underpass.
Conservation and preservation of Whiting Mill – with a view to re-opening it to the public.
A new all-weather, accessible path linking the upper level car park to the mill and foreshore.
Access improvements within the country park.
Better links with the Humber Bridge Tourist Information Centre.
An events programme, organised by a heritage officer, that could include an oral history project, a website with downloadable education resources and learning activities, such as guided walks, talks by guest speakers and outdoor workshops.
Councillor Richard Burton, cabinet portfolio holder for leisure, tourism and culture at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The Humber Bridge Country Park is a beautiful local nature reserve and is already popular with residents and visitors.
“There is, however, a great deal of untapped potential and the council is looking to invest in the country park’s heritage assets. These exciting plans will help showcase the area in a visual way and allow people to explore the park’s history.
“The council would now like to hear the views of residents and will be undertaking drop-in sessions and making a survey available online and at the Hessle Centre and Humber Bridge Tourist Information Centre.”
