College Students Deliver Food Bank Christmas Cheer
Fri 20th December 2019East Riding College students on level two public services decided to collect for the Beverley food bank as part of the citizenship and diversity unit of their course.
They wanted to contribute to the fantastic work the foodbank’s voluntary staff do to help the users they support. The students exceeded all expectations and filled three large collection tubs with generous donations from the staff and students of East Riding College. They delivered these in the week before Christmas and met with volunteers who explained to them how the foodbank worked and then had the opportunity to help in sorting and categorising food ready for distribution.
The goods collected will be distributed to clients in time for Christmas, when a lot of households will need the extra support to feed their families, and to provide some Christmas cheer.
Tutor Neil Reade helped coordinate the collection and delivery of the foodstuffs to the Beverley food bank, alongside his students. He said, “We’ve been overwhelmed by the response, and generosity of spirit. The students have done a good job of collecting the goods themselves and promoting the collection in the College. We have far exceeded our original target of being able to deliver a box of seasonal goods to help out the food bank at Christmas. Each donation makes a huge difference to someone’s Christmas, so it’s heart-warming to see how much we’ve been able to collect, and the students have certainly taken on board the wider issues and citizenship values the project has highlighted.”
