College earns environmental award

East Riding College has earned the top accreditation as part of an environmental awards scheme for the second year running.
The College received an award for once again achieving “Green Status” as part of the Investors in the Environment scheme at an awards ceremony.
David Jackson, safety, health and environment manager for East Riding College, said: “We were very proud to become the first college in the country to achieve Green Status last year and we are very pleased to have maintained this high standard for a second year.
“We have clear environmental management and sustainability strategies aimed at reducing waste, increasing recycling and educating both students and staff about the importance of reducing our environmental impact as an organisation and as individuals.”
The awards organisers described the College as “having a clear focus on building environmental knowledge, with an online sustainability training package available to all, and has saved thousands this year by introducing car sharing incentives."
The Investors in the Environment scheme now has 75 members in the region, who are collectively saving thousands of tonnes of CO2 and hundreds of thousands of pounds.
It is managed and delivered by the Yorkshire Energy Partnership and aims to help businesses in Yorkshire become more sustainable and competitive.
Jenny Jensen, business services manager at Investors in the Environment, said: “We really applaud the work of East Riding College and their passion and enthusiasm for the scheme.
“They’ve made some great changes to reduce their environmental impact and their staff and student engagement are excellent with online training packages, learning tutorials and staff development workshops."
