Celebrating Pride and music this June

Make Music Day is back for 2024!
East Riding Libraries are celebrating Make Music Day on Friday, 21 June 2024. Featuring a series of events and live music, residents will be able to get musical across the East Riding! With drop in events at libraries and singers popping up in towns across the county, it's sure to be a day to remember. Some of our events will include a singer in Little Weighton in partnership with the mobile library, and a Dolly Parton tribute singing her way around Driffield! On Saturday, 22 June, Beverley Folk Festival have partnered with Beverley Library to bring a selection of singers to the venue in the afternoon. This will be a completely free drop-in event; no tickets required and will run between 2 - 3.30pm. There are many more events to be announced, so keep your ears open and your eyes peeled.
Orangery Concerts
Looking for live music? Look no further than Sewerby Hall and Gardens Orangery Concerts. From ukelele bands to Simply Brass, there is something for everyone. To enjoy the concerts at Sewerby Hall, standard admission charges apply. Coming up in the Orangery this June:
Listen, sing, tap your feet and rattle your jewellery to the one and only Driffield Ukulele Band on Thursday, 6 June. The Band Covers a wide range of music from the distant past to present day including pop, folk and country, jazz and blues and contemporary rock.
Buckrose Concert Band will take the stage of the Orangery on Sunday, 2 June for an afternoon of brass, woodwind and percussion playing classics, pop, jazz and musicals. Pop along from 2pm to enjoy.
On Sunday, 9 June at 2pm enjoy The East Riding of Yorkshire Band. They are a Brass Band situated in East Yorkshire but with players from all over the East Riding of Yorkshire and beyond. We are a traditional Brass Band and our programmes usually feature a mixture of items from Hymn Tunes and Marches to popular film music and TV scores, something for all ages. Standard admission charges apply.
Thursday, 13 June sees the Swanland U3A Choir take the stage from 2pm. They are a four part, mixed acapella choir, who sing a range of numbers from 16th madrigals to folk songs and other contemporary music by John Rutter for example. Standard admission charges apply.
Susan Collier takes to the Orangery on Thursday, 20 June. She likes to perform a wide range of music on the piano with songs from musicals, popular songs from the decades, film themes, a little jazz and a touch of light contemporary classical to relax and uplift every listener.
On Thursday, 27 June join around 16 ukelele players when Ukes of Hazard return to the Orangery. They play and sing a wide range of popular music generally identified with the older generation. They have previously played many times at the Orangery and it has always been an enjoyable experience.
Why not come along and hear violinist Ben Couper on Sunday, 30 June? Ben Couper is a professional violinist and for this concert in the Orangery, will play the electric violin performing a lively programme of music from popular to classical styles. Ben has played the violin for 35 years and has performed for the now King Charles and Queen Camilla back in 2013 when they were on a visit to Bridlington, and for audiences around the UK and internationally. This concert will showcase improvisations, string quartets just using one violin and loop pedals to perform a great variety of music.
June is Pride month!
June marks Pride month and residents of the East Riding are being encouraged to show their support for LGBTQ+ events being held throughout the summer.
Staff at East Riding of Yorkshire Council will be getting involved at Pride events across the area – and County Hall in Beverley is already flying the rainbow flag.
Dedicated to celebrating the work of LGBTQ+ communities, Pride month also raises awareness of issues that may affect those communities.
Many Pride events are being held during the summer, starting with a week-long event in Beverley. They include:
24-30 June – Beverley Pride · 6 July – Bridlington Pride · 27 July – Pride in Hull · 17 August – Goole Pride · 22 September - Wolds Pride
To show solidarity and commitment, staff from various council teams will be taking part and supporting many of the Pride events.
