Carbon-saving £800,000 road improvement scheme for Walkington

Carbon Saving 800 000 Road Improvement Scheme For Walkington

Essential road improvements are scheduled to begin in Walkington, near Beverley, using a carbon-saving scheme which recycles the existing materials.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is to invest £800,000 to upgrade Wold Road between Walkington Heads and the B1230 Hunsley Road, starting on Monday 23rd February.

The work will involve resurfacing the road by recycling the existing material to create a new foundation layer, over which a new road surface will be laid.

It has been calculated the project will save 146 tonnes of carbon during the construction phase, compared to traditional resurfacing methods, for this 1.4km stretch of road. This equates to roughly the total annual carbon consumption of 15 to 20 homes.

The road will also be widened, and its edges will be strengthened.

The work is due to take between eight and ten weeks to complete, weather permitting, and the road will be closed to traffic during that time.

A diversion will be in place via the B1230 Hunsley Road, West End, East End, Mill Lane and Walkington Heads.

Vehicle access to properties within the working area will be maintained, but residents will be informed of any further restrictions.

Pedestrians will also have access, while bin collections, post, deliveries and the emergency services will not be restricted.

The works will be carried out by contractor Britcon Ltd, on behalf of the council.

Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “We want to thank residents and drivers for their patience while we carry out this essential work to improve and strengthen this road.

“We will be using a recycling technique which reduces our carbon footprint and is kinder to the environment, compared with traditional methods.”
