Beverley to play major role in next year's Tour de Yorkshire
Fri 9th October 2015Beverley is the only East Yorkshire town selected to host a start or finish of a stage of the 2016 Tour de Yorkshire (TdY) cycle race. Held over 3 days, this year's TdY starts on April 29th. There will be a women's race on Sunday 30th.
Doncaster, Middlesbrough, Otley, Scarborough and Settle are to be the other hosts of starts and finishes. The event organisers, Welcome to Yorkshire, said there had been 14 expressions of interest from towns wanting to host a start or finish.
The Tour de Yorkshire was established after Yorkshire hosted the Tour de France Grand Depart in 2014 - the response was so great that an estimated 1.2m people watched it as it passed through the stunning Yorkshire countryside and towns. The exact route for 2016 will be announced in December.
It is expected that there will be high profile individuals and teams taking part again - last year's inaugural men's race was won by Norwegian Lars-Petter Nordhaug for Team Sky from a field of 140 riders, including Olympic champion and Tour de France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins.
