Beverley Minster Holds Record Numbers at College Graduation
Wed 31st October 2018Beverley’s historic Minster has held its biggest ever student graduation.
The graduation, for degree students from Bishop Burton College’s University Centre, was so large it had to be split into two separate events at Beverley Minster – one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
In total, more than 250 students graduated from higher education programmes in subjects including animal management, agriculture, equine, sport and more.
The graduation included students from Bishop Burton, near Beverley, and its sister college, Riseholme, in Lincolnshire.
College Chief Executive and Principal, Bill Meredith, told the assembled guests at the stunning Minster: “It has been another very busy year at Bishop Burton – and one of notable successes for our higher education provision. We have again revalidated programmes to ensure students are fully prepared for employment, giving them the best possible chance of entering the sector of their choice at a high level.
“And I’m delighted to be able to say that we received our best ever National Student Survey (NSS) results, with more students than ever saying they were happy studying for a degree with us.”
Mr Meredith went on to highlight some notable individual student successes, but stressed all the graduates in attendance should be incredibly proud of their achievements.
He added: “So to all of our graduates, I wish you the very best for your future careers. I have every confidence you will be successful in your chosen field and hope you will always remember your time at Bishop Burton College’s University Centre fondly.”
In delivering a formal vote of thanks, student president Lydia Eales said: “The experiences and opportunities we have been given are truly unique.
“On behalf of all students, I’d like to offer our eternal gratitude.”
The college’s new Chair of Governors, Alan Menzies, said: “Today is a day of firsts – my first graduation as chair of governors, the first time we have held our full-time and part-time graduation in Beverley Minster and the first time our students can officially call themselves graduates of Bishop Burton and Riseholme College.
“I’d like to take the time to thank the Principal and his staff for their efforts over the past 12 months. It has been a challenging period in the sector, but the college moves into this new academic year stronger and more determined than ever before.”
Bishop Burton College’s University Centre runs a wide range of degree programmes across numerous subject areas. It also offers vocational further education courses for school-leavers and was recently rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted for the level of care and support it provides to its residential students.
